Using facial expressions to assess pain in older patients after surgery
Efficiency of Facial Expression Diagnostic System in Pain Assessment After Geriatric Surgery
Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University · NCT05756140

What this trial studies
This observational study evaluates the effectiveness of a facial expression diagnostic system in assessing pain levels in geriatric patients following surgery. It aims to determine the concordance between self-reported pain scores and those assessed through facial analysis, as well as the correlation between nurse evaluations and facial analysis. The study will involve at least 68 patients aged 65 and older, who will be monitored for pain assessment within the first 24 hours post-surgery. Data will be collected through informed consent and a sociodemographic data form.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 65 and older who are undergoing geriatric surgery and are awake and oriented post-operation.
Not a fit: Patients with facial anomalies affecting expression analysis or those who have been discharged within 24 hours post-surgery may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a more accurate and objective method for assessing pain in elderly patients, leading to better pain management.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of facial expression analysis in pain assessment is a novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in other populations, suggesting potential for success.
