What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), which is characterized by chronic widespread pain. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an NMES group, receiving stimulation to the upper trapezius muscle for 30 minutes, five days a week for four weeks, or a control group. In addition to NMES, all patients will engage in neck motion exercises, upper trapezius stretching, and posture exercises. The study aims to evaluate changes in pain, disability, and sleep quality among participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-65 diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome.
Not a fit: Patients with regular exercise habits, malignancies, or those who are pregnant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce pain and improve the quality of life for patients with fibromyalgia.
How similar studies have performed: While studies on TENS have shown positive outcomes for pain relief in fibromyalgia, the specific application of NMES is less explored, making this approach relatively novel.
