Using elastography to predict kidney health outcomes

Application of Transthoracic Shear-wave Ultrasound Elastography in the Evaluation of Renal Function and Diagnosis of Renal Disease

Observational National Taiwan University Hospital · NCT06363032

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of elastography, specifically shear-wave elastography, in predicting renal outcomes in patients with kidney disease. The study will assess the stiffness of renal tissue, which may correlate with the extent of interstitial fibrosis and renal function decline. Patients scheduled for renal biopsy and sonography will be included, and the study will utilize advanced ultrasound techniques to gather data on renal parenchyma stiffness. The findings could enhance understanding of kidney disease progression and improve patient management.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients scheduled for renal biopsy and renal sonography who are over 20 years old.

Not a fit: Patients under 20 years old or those unable to hold their breath for at least 5 seconds may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a non-invasive method to predict kidney disease progression and guide treatment decisions.

How similar studies have performed: While elastography has shown promise in other medical fields, its application in predicting renal outcomes is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
