Using deep learning to predict radiation dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients

Deep Learning-based Classification and Prediction of Radiation Dermatitis in Head and Neck

Observational Cancer Institute and Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences · NCT05607225

What this trial studies

This study aims to develop a deep learning model that classifies and predicts the severity of radiation dermatitis in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy. It involves collecting images of the neck area from patients before and during treatment, which are then graded by experienced radiotherapy experts. The model's performance will be evaluated using various metrics such as accuracy and precision to ensure its reliability in clinical settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with confirmed head and neck carcinoma who are undergoing radical radiotherapy.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to cooperate with image acquisition will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this model could enhance the ability of healthcare providers to predict and manage radiation dermatitis, improving patient care.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of deep learning in medical imaging is gaining traction, this specific application in predicting radiation dermatitis is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
