What this trial studies

This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of combining bilateral single-electrode stimulation of the ventralis oralis nucleus with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in patients suffering from Meige syndrome, a rare movement disorder. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, and their motor symptoms will be assessed using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale before and after treatment. Secondary outcomes will include quality of life and mental health assessments, as well as monitoring for any adverse effects related to the procedure. The findings aim to enhance treatment options for individuals with this debilitating condition.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals diagnosed with blepharospasm-type Meige syndrome who have not responded adequately to standard treatments.

Not a fit: Patients with neurological diseases other than Meige syndrome or those with severe cognitive or psychiatric disorders may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve motor function and quality of life for patients with Meige syndrome.

How similar studies have performed: While deep brain stimulation has been explored for various dystonias, this specific dual-target approach is novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
