Using COX-2 inhibitors to prevent urethral stricture recurrence after surgery
Can COX-2 Inhibitor Decrease Stricture Recurrence After Direct Vision Internal Urethrotomy?
This study is testing if a medication called meloxicam can help prevent urethral strictures from coming back after surgery in people who have had these strictures for unknown reasons or due to previous medical treatments.

What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of COX-2 inhibitors, specifically meloxicam, in reducing the recurrence of urethral strictures following direct vision internal urethrotomy. It focuses on patients with idiopathic or iatrogenic urethral strictures and aims to determine if administering NSAIDs can lead to better long-term outcomes. The study will compare outcomes between those receiving the medication and those given a placebo. Participants will be monitored for stricture recurrence over a specified follow-up period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with a urethral stricture length of 1.5 cm or less and an ASA score of 3 or lower.
Not a fit: Patients with recurrent urethral strictures occurring two or more times or those with pelvic fracture urethral distraction defects may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the recurrence of urethral strictures, improving patient quality of life and reducing the need for additional surgeries.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results with COX-2 inhibitors in similar contexts, indicating potential for success in this approach.
