Using corticosteroids to treat loss of smell and taste in COVID-19 patients
Anosmia and / or Ageusia in COVID-19: Timeline, Treatment With Early Corticosteroid and Recovery

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effectiveness of early corticosteroid treatment, specifically dexamethasone, in patients experiencing anosmia (loss of smell) and ageusia (loss of taste) due to COVID-19. It involves two groups of patients, one receiving oral dexamethasone and the other receiving it intravenously, to compare recovery times. The study aims to assess the pharmacokinetics of dexamethasone and its impact on the recovery of these sensory deficits. Participants will be monitored for their recovery progress over a specified period.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms experiencing anosmia or ageusia.
Not a fit: Patients with diabetes, contraindications for dexamethasone, or mental disabilities may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly improve the recovery of smell and taste in COVID-19 patients.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on corticosteroids for COVID-19, the specific focus on anosmia and ageusia recovery is relatively novel.
