Using brain stimulation to improve consciousness in patients with brain injuries
Effect of Daily Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on the Cognitive Evolution of Patients in an Altered State of Consciousness
This study is testing if a gentle brain stimulation technique can help people with severe brain injuries who are only minimally aware become more conscious.

What this trial studies
This study investigates the effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, on patients diagnosed with a minimally conscious state due to severe brain injuries. The approach involves applying low-intensity electrical currents to specific brain areas to promote neuroplasticity and potentially enhance consciousness. Participants will receive either real or placebo stimulation, and the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of tDCS in improving signs of consciousness. The research is grounded in previous findings that suggest tDCS can temporarily improve consciousness in similar patient populations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with a minimally conscious state who have provided informed consent through a family member.
Not a fit: Patients in a coma or those with metallic brain implants, craniotomy, or pacemakers may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could significantly enhance the recovery of consciousness in patients with severe brain injuries.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promising results with tDCS in improving consciousness in patients with similar conditions, indicating potential for success.
