What this trial studies

This study involves administering botulinum toxin injections to 30 patients with an open abdomen, aiming to evaluate its effectiveness in facilitating faster and better closure of the abdominal wall. The injections will be given within 72 hours of the open abdomen condition, targeting specific areas on both sides of the abdomen. The underlying hypothesis is that the toxin will relax the abdominal wall muscles, potentially improving surgical outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients who have an open abdomen due to any medical indication.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of previous incisional hernia in the midline or those not undergoing active treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved closure rates and outcomes for patients with open abdomen conditions.

How similar studies have performed: While botulinum toxin has been used in other abdominal applications, its use specifically for open abdomen treatment has limited prior study, making this approach relatively novel.
