Using blood flow restriction to enhance core muscle activation in low back pain patients

The Effects of Blood Flow Restriction-based Abdominal draw-in Maneuver on Activation of Abdominal Core Muscles in Patients With Non-specific Low Back Pain

NA · China Medical University Hospital · NCT05996341

What this trial studies

This study investigates the effectiveness of blood flow restriction (BFR) combined with the abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) to improve the activation of the transverse abdominis muscle in patients suffering from non-specific low back pain. Participants will be divided into groups, with one group receiving BFR during abdominal exercises while another group will perform the same exercises without BFR. The study aims to assess muscle activation and thickness using ultrasound at various intervals throughout the six-week intervention period. By exploring this novel approach, the research seeks to provide a new method for enhancing core stability and potentially alleviating low back pain.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals with non-specific low back pain lasting more than six weeks and a pain index between 2 and 10.

Not a fit: Patients with acute lower back pain, stress fractures, or other serious spinal conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to improved core muscle activation and reduced low back pain for patients.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown promise in using blood flow restriction for muscle activation, suggesting potential success for this novel application.
