Using bedside ultrasound to guide extubation in elderly patients after surgery

Application of Pulmonary Ultrasound Combined With Oxygenation Index in Precision Extubation After General Anesthesia in Elderly Patients -- a Multicenter, Randomized, Double-blind, Parallel Controlled Clinical Trial

Observational Tianjin First Central Hospital · NCT05674812

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the timing of extubation in elderly patients who have undergone major abdominal surgery and are on mechanical ventilation. By utilizing bedside ultrasound, the study seeks to assess lung function and determine the optimal time for ventilator withdrawal to minimize complications. The research focuses on reducing the incidence of ventilator-associated lung injuries and improving patient outcomes in the intensive care unit. The study will involve a comprehensive evaluation of patients aged 65 and older who meet specific criteria.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly patients aged 65 and older who require mechanical ventilation following major abdominal surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with severe respiratory conditions or those who have experienced unplanned extubation may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the risk of respiratory complications and improve recovery times for elderly patients after surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While the application of pulmonary ultrasound in critically ill patients is gaining traction, this specific approach to guiding extubation in elderly patients is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
