What this trial studies

This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) in reducing chronic lower back pain (cLBP) among older adults living in continuing care retirement communities (CCRC). Participants will receive weekly text message prompts to report their pain levels using a visual analog scale, allowing for real-time monitoring of their condition. The study will focus on individuals aged 65 and older who have a musculoskeletal diagnosis of cLBP, utilizing auricular acupuncture as a complementary treatment to traditional pain management methods. The goal is to improve pain management and overall function in this population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 65 years old residing in the Oaknoll Community Center with a diagnosis of chronic lower back pain.

Not a fit: Patients who have previously received Battlefield Acupuncture treatment or have a documented dementia diagnosis may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a non-invasive and effective pain management option for older adults suffering from chronic lower back pain.

How similar studies have performed: Emerging evidence suggests that Battlefield Acupuncture has shown promise in treating chronic pain, although this specific application in older adults is relatively novel.
