What this trial studies

This clinical trial evaluates whether plain language summaries generated by artificial intelligence can enhance patient understanding of ophthalmology notes. Adults receiving eye care at the Jules Stein Eye Institute will be randomly assigned to receive either standard medical notes or notes supplemented with AI-generated summaries that simplify complex information. Participants will complete a survey to assess their comprehension of their diagnosis and treatment, as well as their confidence in their care. The study aims to improve communication between patients and healthcare providers through clearer information.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are English-speaking adults aged 18 and older who are receiving ophthalmology care at the Jules Stein Eye Institute.

Not a fit: Patients with known cognitive impairments or those unable to provide informed consent may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly enhance patient comprehension and confidence in their eye care.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using AI for patient education, but this specific approach is relatively novel.
