What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to improve patient comprehension of discharge instructions by utilizing generative artificial intelligence to create patient-friendly summaries. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive AI-generated discharge instructions or standard discharge instructions at the time of their hospital discharge. The goal is to assess whether the AI-generated summaries enhance understanding and retention of important medical information compared to traditional methods.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients admitted to the Inpatient Medicine unit at NYU Langone Health who can read and understand English.
Not a fit: Patients who are in inpatient hospice or discharged to home hospice may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly improve patient understanding of their discharge instructions, leading to better health outcomes and reduced readmission rates.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of AI in healthcare is a growing field, this specific approach to generating discharge summaries is relatively novel and has not been widely tested in clinical settings.
