What this trial studies

This study aims to validate a novel system that uses aerosol glycerine to detect and localize pulmonary air leaks during thoracic surgery. Air leaks are a common complication that can lead to increased postoperative morbidity and costs, particularly following lobectomy. The traditional method for detecting these leaks, the submersion test, is not suitable for video-assisted thoracic surgery. By creating visible glycerine aerosol smoke that flows through any leaks, this approach seeks to improve surgical outcomes and reduce recovery times for patients undergoing lung procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients undergoing lung transplant surgery or those who are organ donors ineligible to donate lungs.

Not a fit: Healthy individuals will not benefit from this study as they do not meet the eligibility criteria.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this method could significantly reduce postoperative complications and hospital stays for patients undergoing lung surgery.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, it is not clear if similar studies have been conducted, making this a potentially novel intervention.
