What this trial studies

This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of two photon fluorescence microscopy (TPFM) in detecting residual basal cell carcinoma during standard local excision procedures. The study will involve fluorescently labeling excised tissue and measuring the distance to inked surgical margins using TPFM, followed by standard permanent section evaluations for confirmation. By comparing the results from TPFM with traditional methods, the study seeks to enhance surgical outcomes and ensure complete removal of cancerous tissue.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients undergoing treatment for basal cell carcinoma who are not receiving Mohs surgery.

Not a fit: Patients who are not undergoing surgical treatment for basal cell carcinoma or those receiving Mohs surgery may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more accurate surgical margins and better outcomes for patients with basal cell carcinoma.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of advanced imaging techniques in surgical oncology is gaining traction, this specific application of TPFM for basal cell carcinoma is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
