Using advanced chest X-ray technology to screen for lung cancer

Chest X-ray Tomosynthesis for Detection of Lung Cancer and Lung Disease

Observational University of California, San Diego · NCT06577883

This study is testing a new type of chest X-ray to see if it can find lung cancer as well as or better than regular CT scans for people being screened for the disease.

What this trial studies

This observational clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chest tomosynthesis as a potential alternative to computed tomography (CT) for lung cancer detection. Participants will undergo both chest tomosynthesis and routine CT scans to compare their diagnostic accuracy. The study also focuses on developing artificial intelligence tools to enhance the detection of lung cancer in tomosynthesis images. Researchers will assess the sensitivity and specificity of this new imaging technique in a population undergoing lung cancer screening or evaluation of suspicious lung nodules.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals undergoing lung cancer screening, evaluation of suspicious lung nodules, or those with newly diagnosed lung cancer.

Not a fit: Patients with a prior history of lung cancer treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a less invasive and more accessible method for early lung cancer detection.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using advanced imaging techniques for lung cancer detection, but this specific approach with chest tomosynthesis is novel.
