Using a carbohydrate-rich diet to treat acute intermittent porphyria
Clinical Research on Acute Intermittent Porphyria and the Use of Carbohydrate-Rich Diet as a Treatment

What this trial studies
This clinical trial investigates the effects of a carbohydrate-rich diet on patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP). Participants will follow two different diet plans over an 8-week period, alternating between high and moderate carbohydrate intake. The study aims to assess changes in symptoms, glucose levels, insulin, cytokines, amino acids, and gut microbiota, as well as mitochondrial activity and potential genetic mutations. The research will be conducted at Nordland Hospital and the University of Oslo, involving 50 participants diagnosed with AIP.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults diagnosed with acute intermittent porphyria.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a diagnosis of acute intermittent porphyria or those with diabetes may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a novel dietary treatment option that alleviates symptoms and improves health outcomes for patients with acute intermittent porphyria.
How similar studies have performed: While dietary interventions have been explored in other conditions, this specific approach for acute intermittent porphyria is novel and has not been extensively tested.
