Understanding the recurrence of febrile seizures and epilepsy in children
A Prospective Cohort Study Of The Incidence And Risk Factors Of Recurrent Febrile Seizures And Epilepsy Following Febrile Seizures
This study looks at how often kids in Vietnam have more febrile seizures or develop epilepsy after their first seizure to see what factors might affect this.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to investigate the recurrence of febrile seizures and the subsequent development of epilepsy in Vietnamese children who have experienced their first febrile seizure. Conducted at Children's Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, the study involves a longitudinal cohort of children aged 1 month to 8 years, who are monitored for an average of two years. Researchers will analyze various risk factors associated with recurrence and the development of epilepsy, utilizing a sample size of at least 385 participants to ensure robust findings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are Vietnamese children aged 1 month to 8 years who have been diagnosed with their first febrile seizure.
Not a fit: Patients with underlying neurological conditions that increase the likelihood of epilepsy or those unwilling to return for follow-up may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable insights into the risk factors for recurrent febrile seizures and epilepsy, potentially guiding preventive strategies and treatment options for affected children.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated varying success in understanding the recurrence of febrile seizures and the risk of developing epilepsy, making this study a valuable addition to the existing literature.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Children had a diagnosis of first febrile seizure based on the definition of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in 1993. That was a seizure occurring in childhood after one month of age associated with a febrile illness not caused by an infection of the central nervous system, without previous neonatal seizures or a previous unprovoked seizure, and not meeting the criteria for other acute symptomatic seizures. Fever is clinically a temperature of at least 38°C by any method as recorded either in the emergency department, outpatient clinics, or as noted in the medical history, as well as measured upon admission to the inpatient departments. * Patients were between 1 month and 8 years of age * Agreement from parents with written informed consent Exclusion Criteria: * Febrile paroxysmal events were atypical for seizures * Underlying neurological conditions that increase the likelihood of epilepsy * Unwillingness to return for follow-up
