What this trial studies

This observational study aims to gather insights into the short-term recovery and patient experiences following two surgical procedures for osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint: trapeziectomy and TMC-joint arthroplasty. A total of 200 participants will be enrolled, with 100 undergoing each procedure. Participants will maintain a diary to document their pain levels, medication use, functional abilities, and overall quality of life during the recovery period. The study seeks to compare the outcomes of these two common surgical approaches.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-75 who have failed conservative treatment for osteoarthritis and are scheduled for trapeziectomy or TMC-joint arthroplasty.

Not a fit: Patients with mental disabilities, active infections, current malignancies, or recent corticoid infiltration may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide valuable information to improve recovery protocols and patient care after hand surgery for arthritis.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited data on short-term recovery experiences specifically for these procedures, the study addresses a gap in existing literature, suggesting a novel approach to understanding patient outcomes.
