Understanding muscle and cognitive issues after critical illness
Precision Medicine for Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PreMed4PICS): Pathogenetic Phenotypes in Skeletal Muscle Weakness and Transcriptomic Signatures for Long-term Sequelae
This study is trying to understand why some people have muscle weakness and memory problems after being in intensive care by looking at their blood and muscle samples over a year.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to identify the underlying mechanisms of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) by analyzing the acute inflammatory response in critically ill patients. It will involve collecting blood samples and muscle tissue from patients admitted to the ICU and following them for up to 12 months after discharge. The study seeks to establish predictive signatures that correlate with long-term outcomes such as muscle weakness and cognitive impairment. By utilizing transcriptomic profiling, researchers hope to uncover the molecular pathways involved in these conditions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult patients admitted to the ICU without prior neurocognitive or muscular impairments.
Not a fit: Patients with neurocritical conditions, previous impairments, or terminal illnesses may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better prediction and management of long-term complications in ICU survivors.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of transcriptomic profiling in this context is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in understanding post-ICU complications.
