What this trial studies
This study aims to optimize treatments for major depressive disorder and epilepsy by developing a continuous and objective measure of internal mood using video-derived audio-facial behaviors. By utilizing intracranial electrodes, the researchers will investigate the neural correlates of these behaviors within the limbic network. The goal is to provide reliable longitudinal estimates of mood that can be monitored in both home and clinical settings, addressing the limitations of current mood assessment methods.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 to 65 diagnosed with major depressive disorder currently experiencing a major depressive episode.
Not a fit: Patients with diffuse epilepsy involving several lobes of the brain may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more accurate and timely interventions for patients with mood disorders.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of video-derived behavioral measures is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in understanding mood and neural correlates, suggesting potential for success.
