Understanding inflammation and platelets in sickle cell disease
Inflammation, Platelets and Sickle Cell Disease
This study looks at how inflammation and platelets behave during painful episodes in adults with sickle cell disease to better understand their role in the condition and find new ways to help manage it.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to explore the mechanisms of thrombo-inflammation during vaso-occlusive crises in adults with sickle cell disease. By collecting blood samples during routine care, researchers will analyze various biological markers related to platelet activation and inflammation at different stages of the crisis. The study seeks to deepen the understanding of how platelets and immune responses contribute to the complications associated with sickle cell disease. This research could provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for managing sickle cell disease.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults over 18 years old diagnosed with sickle cell disease who are hospitalized during a vaso-occlusive crisis.
Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those currently taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for patients with sickle cell disease by identifying new therapeutic targets.
How similar studies have performed: While the study explores established concepts of thrombo-inflammation, the specific focus on sickle cell disease and its unique pathophysiology may provide novel insights.
