Understanding how sleep apnea affects diabetes risk

Mechanisms of Prediabetic States in Sleep Apnea

Not applicable Interventional University of Chicago · NCT04234217

What this trial studies

This study aims to explore the metabolic mechanisms linking obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to impaired glucose metabolism and prediabetes. It will involve patients with OSA and prediabetes undergoing assessments under three different conditions: untreated OSA, treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and pharmacologically suppressed lipolysis using Niacin. By analyzing systemic and cellular metabolic pathways, the study seeks to identify potential targets for improving glucose metabolism in these patients. The randomized cross-over design will allow for direct comparisons of the effects of treatment and conditions on metabolic outcomes.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are overweight or obese individuals who have been diagnosed with prediabetes and obstructive sleep apnea.

Not a fit: Patients who are diabetic, have severe hypertension, or are taking medications that could interfere with the study assessments may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new strategies for predicting and treating metabolic impairments in patients with sleep apnea.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have indicated a relationship between sleep apnea and glucose metabolism, but this specific mechanistic approach is novel.
