Understanding how depression and anxiety affect responses to rewards and losses
Evaluating Overlap and Distinctiveness in Neurocomputational Loss and Reward Elements of the RDoC Matrix
NA · Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University · NCT05384158

What this trial studies
This study investigates the neural and behavioral mechanisms of how individuals with depressed mood, anhedonia, and anxiety respond to rewards and losses. It aims to determine the relationships among these valuation mechanisms and how they may change over time, under different task instructions, and after undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy. Participants will engage in tasks that assess their responses to rewards and losses, both with and without specific instructions, to gain insights into their emotional and cognitive processes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals experiencing symptoms of mood disorders, anxiety, or anhedonia that impact their daily functioning.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of seizure disorders, significant head injuries, or those currently pregnant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved therapeutic strategies for individuals suffering from depression and anxiety by enhancing our understanding of their valuation processes.
How similar studies have performed: While studies on valuation mechanisms in mood disorders exist, this specific approach combining cognitive behavioral therapy with valuation tasks is relatively novel.
