Understanding genetics in men at risk for prostate cancer
Understanding of Genetics by Men at Risk for Prostate Cancer
This study is trying to see how well African American and rural White men at risk for prostate cancer understand genetic testing and whether an educational video can help them communicate better with their caregivers.

What this trial studies
This study investigates how African American and rural White men at risk for localized prostate cancer understand prognostic genetic technology. It aims to explore the comprehension of tissue-based genetic tests and the impact of an educational video on patient-caregiver communication. By focusing on health disparities, the study seeks to ensure that advancements in genomic medicine translate into real health benefits for these populations. The research employs focus group discussions to gather insights and improve genetic literacy among participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include African American or White men aged 40 to 95 who live in rural or urban areas and are willing to participate.
Not a fit: Patients who are not men or those who do not meet the age and racial criteria may not receive benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of genetic testing among men at risk for prostate cancer, leading to better treatment decisions.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in improving health outcomes through enhanced genetic literacy, making this approach promising yet still relatively novel.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * African-American or White men * Living in a rural or urban areas * Age 40 to 95 years old * Able and willing to provide informed consent * English-speaking * Willing to participate in the study. This study will use the United States Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development's definition of rural, which is as a city or town that has a population less than 50,000 inhabitants to define rural. This study will use the United States Census Bureau's definition of urban, which is a city or town that has a population greater than 50,000 inhabitants to define urban. Exclusion Criteria: Women will be excluded from participating in this study. However, women will be recruited to serve on an advisory panel to review the video-based educational tool for the comprehension of genomic terminology for prognostic genetic testing in patients with localized prostate cancer.
