Understanding and Addressing Multiple Myeloma Disparities
Development of a Research Infrastructure for Understanding and Addressing Multiple Myeloma Disparities

What this trial studies
This study aims to develop and evaluate protocols for conducting research focused on ethnic and racial minorities affected by Multiple Myeloma (MM) using cancer registry data. The investigators will identify, recruit, and survey patients from diverse backgrounds, including African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and non-Hispanic Whites, to gather information on factors related to MM etiology and survival. Initially, a pilot phase will contact 400 eligible patients to assess the feasibility of the recruitment and survey process, with plans to expand to a larger cohort of 1,000 patients per ethnic group across California. The ultimate goal is to inform best practices for recruiting minority populations and to lay the groundwork for larger studies on MM.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 21 and older who have been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma within the last five years and identify as African American, Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or non-Hispanic White.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma or are under the age of 21 will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and treatment strategies for Multiple Myeloma in minority populations.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is focused on minority disparities in Multiple Myeloma, similar studies have shown success in addressing health disparities in other cancer types.
