Ultrasound imaging to examine knee osteoarthritis

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Osteoarthritis. A Comparative Study to Conventional Radiography in Patients With Painful Knee.

What this trial studies

This observational project uses ultrasound and standard X-ray imaging to compare how well each method identifies the grade and complications of knee osteoarthritis. Symptomatic adults over 30 presenting to the radiology department with unilateral or bilateral knee pain will receive ultrasound and X-ray imaging. Images will be correlated to determine concordance in grading and detection of features such as osteophytes, effusion, and cartilage changes. No therapeutic intervention is given; findings are compared for diagnostic performance.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults older than 30 with unilateral or bilateral knee pain and clinical signs of knee osteoarthritis who present for imaging are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with inflammatory arthritides (for example rheumatoid arthritis or SLE), significant prior knee trauma or surgery, serious systemic illness such as renal failure, or women of childbearing age with these conditions are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this comparison.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, ultrasound could provide a radiation-free, bedside option to detect and grade knee osteoarthritis and identify complications earlier.

How similar studies have performed: Prior studies have shown ultrasound can detect many osteoarthritic features and often correlates with X-ray findings, although techniques and reporting are variable and it has not fully replaced radiographs.
