What this trial studies
This is an observational imaging project that uses bedside ultrasound to visualize layers of the abdominal wall in consenting adult volunteers. Participants will provide written informed consent, be screened for eligibility, and undergo noninvasive ultrasound scans of the abdominal/flank region at a single site. The protocol excludes minors, pregnant patients, people unable to consent, those under isolation precautions, and anyone with open abdominal skin wounds. No drugs or invasive procedures are involved; the collected images will be used to characterize anatomy and inform ultrasound-guided procedures in emergency medicine.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 and over who can give written informed consent, are not pregnant, are not under isolation precautions, and have intact abdominal skin are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Pediatric patients, pregnant patients, prisoners, people unable to consent, or those with open abdominal wounds or isolation precautions would not be eligible and therefore would not receive benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the images could help clinicians identify abdominal wall layers more reliably, which may improve the safety and accuracy of ultrasound-guided procedures.
How similar studies have performed: Similar ultrasound imaging approaches are widely used and have supported the safe use of ultrasound-guided regional blocks, so this imaging focus builds on established techniques.
