Treatment of bacterial vaginosis in women using blue light therapy
Use of Blue Light Emitting Diode in the Treatment of Women With Bacterial Vaginosis: a Clinical Trial
This study is testing if blue light therapy can help women aged 18 to 65 with bacterial vaginosis feel better and reduce the chances of it coming back.

What this trial studies
This clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of a blue light emitting diode (LED) at 401 +/- 5nm in treating bacterial vaginosis (BV) in women aged 18 to 65. Participants diagnosed with BV will undergo light therapy, followed by clinical evaluations and questionnaires to assess their condition before and after treatment. The study aims to determine if this non-invasive approach can reduce the recurrence of BV and minimize drug side effects. The mechanism involves the antimicrobial effect of the blue light on pathogens, leading to cell death without resistance development.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are women aged 18 to 65 who have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis.
Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit from this study include those with serious underlying health conditions, such as heart diseases, neoplasias, or those who are pregnant.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could provide a non-invasive alternative for women suffering from bacterial vaginosis, reducing recurrence rates and side effects associated with traditional medications.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of blue light therapy is a novel approach for treating bacterial vaginosis, similar light-based therapies have shown promise in other antimicrobial applications.
