What this trial studies
This intervention focuses on improving end-of-life care for older sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients, particularly those with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The study aims to develop a training program for hospice staff that emphasizes person-centered communication and the importance of collecting sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data. By integrating SOGI information, the goal is to enhance the identification of informal support systems and improve care delivery for SGM patients and their caregivers. The intervention will be pilot tested to assess its effectiveness in fostering inclusive interactions and addressing health disparities in this vulnerable population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are English-speaking individuals aged 18 and older who identify as sexual and gender minorities and are receiving hospice care.
Not a fit: Patients who are under 18, pregnant, prisoners, or decisionally challenged may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could lead to more equitable and personalized end-of-life care for older SGM patients.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically targeting SOGI data collection in hospice care, similar approaches in other healthcare settings have shown promise in improving care for sexual and gender minorities.
