What this trial studies

The Singapore Perioperative Ageing Study aims to create a comprehensive database to monitor elderly patients aged 65 and above who are undergoing major non-cardiac surgeries. This observational study will follow patients from the preoperative phase through to five years post-surgery, focusing on outcomes such as postoperative delirium and myocardial injury. By understanding the challenges faced by this demographic, the study seeks to develop sustainable clinical strategies to improve their surgical outcomes and quality of life. The research will involve neurocognitive assessments and blood tests to gather relevant health data.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are elderly patients aged 65 and older who are scheduled for major non-cardiac surgery.

Not a fit: Patients with a history of psychiatric disease, those undergoing emergency surgeries, or non-residents of Singapore may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved surgical outcomes and quality of life for elderly patients.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies focusing on elderly surgical patients have shown the importance of tailored perioperative care, indicating potential success for this approach.
