Tracking mosquito-borne and other emerging virus infections in Fiji
The AEVI-Fiji Cohort Study: a Longitudinal Study Assessing the Transmission Risk and Dynamics of Mosquito-borne and Respiratory Viruses in Fiji.
This project will follow people aged 6 and older who live in Fiji's Central Division to see how often mosquito-borne and respiratory viruses infect them over time.

What this trial studies
This is a longitudinal household cohort in Fiji's Central Division that enrolls residents aged 6 years and older and follows them over time to measure exposure to arboviruses (like dengue, Zika, chikungunya) and respiratory viruses (including influenza and SARS-CoV-2). Participants provide health questionnaires and biological samples at set visits so researchers can measure antibodies and detect infections. The work is coordinated locally by Fiji National University with laboratory and analytic collaboration from regional and international partners. Results will map seroprevalence, changes in immunity, and patterns of virus circulation across seasons and years.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are residents of Fiji's Central Division aged 6 years or older who have lived in a selected household for at least six months and can provide informed consent.
Not a fit: People who are pregnant, homeless, legally unable to consent, under psychiatric care or institutionalized, or otherwise excluded by the protocol will not be eligible and are unlikely to receive direct benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could help public health officials detect outbreaks earlier and target prevention measures like mosquito control or vaccination more effectively.
How similar studies have performed: Previous seroprevalence and longitudinal cohort studies of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and SARS-CoV-2 have successfully identified transmission patterns and informed public health responses.
