Total energy expenditure in healthy Chinese children (7–18) and adults (30–60) measured with doubly labeled water
Total Energy Expenditure in Healthy Chinese Populations: A Nationwide Study Using the Doubly Labelled Water Method

What this trial studies
This nationwide observational project will recruit healthy children aged 7–18 and adults aged 30–60 at sites in Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Haikou to measure total energy expenditure. Participants will receive standardized anthropometric assessments (height, weight, waist and hip circumferences) and have energy expenditure quantified using the doubly labeled water technique over a defined measurement period. Individuals with malnutrition, overweight or obesity, recent acute illness, chronic diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, or disabilities will be excluded to define a healthy reference group. The data will be used to characterize typical energy requirements across age groups and help inform dietary recommendations and public health planning in China.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Healthy Chinese children aged 7–18 and healthy adults aged 30–60 without malnutrition, overweight/obesity, recent acute illness, chronic disease, musculoskeletal injuries, or disabilities are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People under 7 or over 60, and those with overweight/obesity, chronic medical conditions, recent acute illness, or disabilities are unlikely to receive applicable benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could provide accurate reference values for daily energy needs that help tailor national dietary guidelines and obesity prevention programs.
How similar studies have performed: The doubly labeled water method is the gold standard for measuring total energy expenditure and has been used successfully in national and population studies worldwide, so the approach is well established.
