Total daily energy needs of Chinese children aged 7–13

Study on Total Energy Expenditure and Its Influencing Factors in Chinese Children Aged 7-13 Years (Including Rural Areas) Using the Doubly Labelled Water Method

Observational Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology ,Chinese Academy of Sciences · NCT07054294

We will use a safe isotope method to measure daily energy use and body composition in healthy Chinese children aged 7–13 to help estimate their food needs.

What this trial studies

This observational project will recruit healthy Chinese children aged 7–13 in Shenzhen to measure growth and energy needs. Participants will have detailed anthropometry, questionnaires on diet, socioeconomic status and pubertal development, and measurements of total energy expenditure using doubly labeled water alongside basal metabolic rate, physical activity monitoring, body composition, and environmental temperature exposure. The doubly labeled water method is the gold-standard for measuring total energy expenditure and will be combined with other measures to produce accurate daily energy estimates. Results will fill gaps in the IAEA DLW database for Asia and inform national and regional estimates of food and energy requirements for children.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Healthy Chinese children aged 7–13 who meet national nutritional standards and have no acute illness, chronic disease, musculoskeletal injury, or disability are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Children with malnutrition, overweight or obesity, recent acute illness, chronic diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, or disabilities are excluded and are unlikely to receive benefit from participation in this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could improve national nutrition estimates and help tailor school and public nutrition programs to children's true energy needs.

How similar studies have performed: The doubly labeled water technique is a well-established gold-standard method used successfully in many Western cohorts, but it has been rarely applied to children in Asia, so this application is partly novel.
