What this trial studies

This observational study will enroll 300 patients aged over 20 who are hospitalized with acute coronary syndrome at Sohag University hospitals. Each participant will have a detailed medical history, clinical exam, and laboratory testing including TSH, free T3, free T4 collected within 24 hours of CCU admission, plus serum lipids and cardiac enzymes. Patients already treated for thyroid disease, with acute decompensated heart failure, advanced malignancy, or acute pulmonary thromboembolism will be excluded. The study aims to determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in ACS patients and its relationship with established coronary risk factors.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults older than 20 who are hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome and are not already receiving treatment for thyroid disease.

Not a fit: Patients already on treatment for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, or those with acute decompensated heart failure, advanced cancer, or acute pulmonary embolism are excluded and unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If results show a clear link, clinicians could more readily detect and consider thyroid dysfunction when managing patients with acute coronary syndrome.

How similar studies have performed: Prior observational studies have reported associations between abnormal thyroid tests and worse cardiac outcomes, though results have varied between populations.
