What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a text message-based intervention aimed at reducing safety behaviors related to appearance concerns, compared to a relaxing video intervention. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive daily text reminders to decrease their appearance-related safety behaviors or to watch relaxing videos weekly. The text message group will also utilize a monitoring checklist to track their progress in reducing these behaviors. The goal is to determine which intervention is more effective in addressing issues related to Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Eating Disorders.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals seeking treatment for appearance concerns who are not currently receiving any other mental health treatment.
Not a fit: Patients currently undergoing therapy or treatment for anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or body image issues may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could significantly improve the mental health and well-being of individuals struggling with appearance-related concerns.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of using text messages for safety behavior fading is novel, similar interventions targeting appearance concerns have shown promise in previous studies.
