What this trial studies

This phase III trial evaluates the effectiveness of an eight-week text-based scheduled gradual reduction (SGR) intervention designed to assist rural cancer survivors who smoke in quitting. Participants are randomized into two groups: one receiving personalized text messages to gradually reduce smoking and the other receiving a cessation booklet. The primary goal is to assess smoking cessation rates six months after quitting, while secondary objectives include evaluating the impact on overall quality of life. Follow-up assessments will occur at 30 days and six months post-quit date.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are rural cancer survivors who smoke at least five cigarettes daily and are interested in quitting.

Not a fit: Patients currently using smoking cessation pharmacotherapy or participating in another cessation program may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve smoking cessation rates among rural cancer survivors, enhancing their overall health and quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promising results with text-based smoking cessation interventions, indicating potential for success in this approach.
