Testing airway responsiveness in healthy adults using methacholine

Methacholine Challenge Test (MCT) in Healthy Adults: Oscillometry Measured Alone Compared to Oscillometry and FEV1 During the Same Test

Observational Allergi- og Lungeklinikken, Elsinore · NCT06509659

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the Methacholine Challenge Test (MCT) and Impedance Oscillometry (IOS) in healthy adults to better understand airway hyperreactivity. The study will assess small airway dysfunction by measuring respiratory resistance and reactance, focusing on the differences between total and proximal airway resistance. By including healthy controls, the study seeks to fill a gap in existing research, which has primarily focused on patients with asthma. The findings may provide insights into the role of small airways in respiratory health.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthy adults with normal lung function and no history of lung disease.

Not a fit: Patients with existing lung diseases, lung symptoms, or those who smoke may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the understanding of airway responsiveness and improve diagnostic approaches for respiratory conditions.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been limited studies on this topic, the approach of combining MCT and IOS in healthy adults is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
