What this trial studies
This randomized pilot feasibility trial at UC Irvine compares standard care with a telemedicine care coordination approach for registered living kidney donor candidates. Participants are randomly assigned to either a control arm (recorded video education plus an in-person donor evaluation and counseling) or an intervention arm (two live telemedicine video sessions for education and for donor evaluation/counseling). The study will measure practicality, acceptability, and whether telemedicine shared decision-making improves candidate engagement and decision-making during the evaluation process. Findings will provide preliminary data to guide wider use of telemedicine in living donor evaluation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are adults (18+) who reside in California and are registered living kidney donor candidates at UC Irvine without medical contraindications to donation.
Not a fit: People with medical contraindications to donation, those living outside California or not registered at UC Irvine, or those without reliable internet/video access are unlikely to benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, telemedicine could make donor education and counseling easier to access, reduce travel and logistical barriers, and improve donor decision-making and engagement.
How similar studies have performed: Telemedicine has shown promise in transplant and remote care settings, but using telemedicine specifically for shared decision-making in living donor evaluation is not well studied.
