What this trial studies

This pilot will enroll 30 veterans at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System to deliver a telehealth-mediated lifestyle intervention centered on progressive resistance and aerobic exercise. Participants complete baseline web surveys on demographics, occupational performance, and telehealth readiness using the VVCMatch tool to identify barriers to remote care. The intervention requires participants to perform 30–90 minutes of exercise at least twice weekly with remote supervision, and outcomes focus on health-related quality of life, mental health, and pain. The trial aims to test feasibility and initial efficacy, with attention to veterans in rural or underserved areas.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are veterans living with a blood cancer who can safely perform 30–90 minutes of aerobic or resistance exercise at least twice weekly and have a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access.

Not a fit: Patients who cannot meet the exercise requirements, have significant balance or motion disabilities that pose safety risks, lack a smart personal device or internet, or are pregnant are unlikely to benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could improve veterans' quality of life, reduce pain and mental health symptoms, and expand access to supportive exercise care through tele-oncology.

How similar studies have performed: Prior telehealth and exercise programs in cancer populations have shown improvements in quality of life and symptom burden, but tailored tele-oncology exercise interventions specifically for veterans with blood cancers remain limited.
