Tele-assessment of mobility using TUG, 30‑second sit-to-stand, and gait speed in older and younger adults

Establishing the Reliability and Validity of Tele-Assessment for Functional Performance in Older Adults: A Comparative Study With Younger Individuals

Observational Istanbul University - Cerrahpasa · NCT07235267

We will test whether video-based versions of three common mobility tests (Timed Up and Go, 30‑second sit-to-stand, and gait speed) work well for people aged 65 and older compared with younger adults.

What this trial studies

This cross-sectional, comparative study will use telehealth (video) formats of three established functional mobility tests to measure intra-rater reliability, validity, and feasibility in community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years). A younger healthy control group (18–44 years) will undergo the same tele-assessments to provide a comparison benchmark. Exclusion criteria include neurological disorders, uncontrolled cardiovascular/metabolic disease, recent surgery or fractures, severe cognitive impairment, and lack of required telecommunication technology. The goal is to determine whether remote testing can produce consistent and accurate mobility measurements suitable for clinical use in geriatric populations.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are community-dwelling older adults (≥65) who are independent in daily activities and can perform the TUG, 30sSTS, and gait speed tests without assistance, plus healthy younger adults (18–44) for comparison.

Not a fit: People with diagnosed neurological disorders, uncontrolled cardiovascular or metabolic disease, recent surgery or fractures, severe cognitive impairment, or without access to required telecommunication technology are unlikely to benefit or may be excluded.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, tele-assessment could expand access to reliable mobility testing for older adults, enabling remote monitoring and earlier detection of functional decline.

How similar studies have performed: Previous tele-assessment work has shown promising but mixed results, with some remote mobility measures agreeing well with in-person testing while others vary by technology and testing conditions.
