Teaching nursing students to do thinking and memory checks using a virtual human
Effectiveness of Virtual Humans in Learning Cognitive Function Assessment Among Nursing Students
NA · Taipei Medical University · NCT07275372
This will test whether a computer-based virtual human helps nursing students learn to do a thinking and memory check (the SPMSQ) better than reading printed materials.

What this trial studies
This interventional comparison tests two teaching methods—an interactive computer-based virtual human versus printed instructional materials—for training nursing students on the SPMSQ cognitive function assessment. Eligible participants are nursing students enrolled in bachelor’s or post-baccalaureate programs who have not previously been taught the SPMSQ. Participants are assigned to use either the virtual human or the printed materials and will spend about 60 minutes learning the assessment. Their ability to perform the cognitive function assessment will be measured after the training to compare learning outcomes between the two groups.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are nursing students currently enrolled in a bachelor's or post-baccalaureate nursing program who have not previously received instruction on the SPMSQ.
Not a fit: Students who have already received instruction on the SPMSQ or individuals who are not enrolled in the specified nursing programs are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could help nurses detect thinking and memory problems earlier by improving how nursing students learn cognitive assessments.
How similar studies have performed: Simulation and virtual patient training have shown benefits in other clinical education areas, but using a virtual human specifically for SPMSQ instruction is relatively new.
