What this trial studies
The study will adapt the Safe Home Supervision (SHS) program for Spanish-speaking Latinx families in Southwest Michigan using a five-step iterative process. Investigators will translate materials, conduct focus groups with caregivers and staff from three Latinx resource centers and a Head Start program, and revise videos and written content based on feedback. The revised materials will be pilot tested and then tested in a randomized controlled trial with caregivers of children aged 15 months to 5 years. Primary outcomes focus on changes in caregiver supervision practices and related child safety behaviors.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Spanish-speaking caregivers of children aged 15 months to 5 years who live in the Southwest Michigan (Kalamazoo) area and can attend local sessions are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Caregivers whose children have a pervasive developmental disorder or are blind or deaf, as well as non-Spanish-speaking families or those living outside the local area, are unlikely to be eligible or to benefit from this specific program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the adapted program could help Spanish-speaking Latinx caregivers better supervise young children at home and reduce unintentional injuries.
How similar studies have performed: The SHS program is based on an evidence-based intervention with prior success improving caregiver supervision, but tailoring it specifically for Latinx families in this region is a novel application.
