Surgical approaches for reconnecting the intestine after trauma

Enteric Anastomoses in Trauma

Observational Methodist Health System · NCT07490158

What this trial studies

This is a retrospective data repository using the Methodist Dallas Medical Center trauma registry to compile cases of traumatic small and large bowel injuries. Researchers will aggregate patient demographics, injury codes, operative approach (initial primary anastomosis, delayed anastomosis, or ostomy diversion), and outcomes such as complications, leak rates, length of stay, and mortality. The goal is to permit quality-improvement analyses comparing these management strategies and to identify factors linked with better or worse outcomes. Eligible records are adults (18+) with diagnostic codes for bowel injury, while prisoners, pregnant persons, and other protected populations are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults (18 years or older) treated at Methodist Dallas Medical Center with a documented traumatic injury to the small or large bowel are the intended cases for this repository.

Not a fit: People under 18, prisoners, pregnant persons, and patients treated outside the Methodist Dallas registry are not included and would not directly benefit from this dataset.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the repository could help surgeons choose safer surgical options after bowel trauma and reduce complications and recovery time.

How similar studies have performed: Prior observational series have shown mixed results, with some evidence that primary anastomosis can be safe in selected trauma patients but randomized data are limited.
