What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the impact of organ transplantation and immunosuppression on the human microbiome. It will involve collecting various biological samples, including oral swabs, saliva, urine, and blood, from kidney and pancreas transplant recipients at multiple time points over one year. The samples will be analyzed using 16s rRNA gene sequencing to understand how the microbiome changes in response to surgery and medication. The study will recruit participants from both deceased and living donor transplant groups.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 75 who are recipients of kidney or pancreas allografts.

Not a fit: Patients outside the age range of 18 to 75 or those unable to provide informed consent will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into how transplantation affects the microbiome, potentially leading to improved patient outcomes and management strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While studies on the microbiome have been conducted, this specific approach focusing on transplantation and immunosuppression is relatively novel.
