Standing in the shower versus sitting on the toilet to reduce leftover urine after catheter removal in women after benign vaginal surgery
Effect of Voiding Position (Standing in the Shower vs. Sitting) on Post-Void Residual Urine Volume (PVR) After Removal of Urinary Catheter in Women Following Benign Vaginal Gynecologic Surgery: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Test whether standing in the shower instead of sitting on the toilet reduces leftover urine and pain after catheter removal in adult women who had benign vaginal gynecologic surgery.

What this trial studies
This interventional trial assigns adult women who had benign vaginal gynecologic surgery with an indwelling catheter to void either standing in the shower or sitting on the toilet after catheter removal. Post-void residual (PVR) urine volume will be measured and secondary outcomes such as pain during voiding, need for recatheterization, and urinary tract infection rates will be recorded. Key eligibility requirements include no bladder injury during surgery, no neurological or urinary conditions affecting voiding, and no active UTI at catheter removal. The procedure is conducted at a single center, Assuta Ashdod, where catheter removal and follow-up PVR measurements occur.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adult women (18 years and older) undergoing benign vaginal gynecologic surgery with an indwelling catheter who have no bladder injury, no neurologic bladder disorder, and no active urinary infection at catheter removal are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Women with intraoperative bladder injury, known neurologic bladder dysfunction, active urinary tract infection, or inability to void in the assigned position are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this simple position change could reduce pain, lower post-void residual urine, and decrease the need for recatheterization after catheter removal.
How similar studies have performed: Some small prior studies in other populations have suggested voiding position can affect residual urine, but evidence specifically in post-operative benign vaginal surgery patients is limited.
