Speech learning and production in people with Parkinson's

Relationship Between Speech Perceptual Learning and Speech Production in Parkinson's Disease

Not applicable Interventional State University of New York at Buffalo · NCT07403539

What this trial studies

This interventional project links speech perception, perceptual learning, and speech production in people with Parkinson's using acoustic measurements. Participants complete tasks that target intensity and rate learning and discrimination while their speech is recorded and analyzed. The study enrolls native North American English speakers with Parkinson's who take levodopa, excludes people with other major neurological, speech, language, or significant hearing disorders, and is conducted at a single site. Results aim to identify predictors of individual differences in how people respond to speech-focused therapies.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are U.S. residents with a Parkinson's diagnosis who are native North American English speakers, take a levodopa-containing medication, and have no other major neurological, speech, language, or significant hearing disorders.

Not a fit: People with significant hearing loss or hearing devices, other major neurological conditions (like stroke or Alzheimer's), non–North American English speakers, or those not taking levodopa are unlikely to benefit from this specific protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could lead to more personalized therapies that help people with Parkinson's both understand speech better and speak more clearly.

How similar studies have performed: While traditional speech therapies for Parkinson's have established benefits, linking perceptual learning of speech to production outcomes is relatively novel and has limited prior evidence.
