Shortening antibiotic treatment for endocarditis

Accelerated Treatment of Endocarditis

Phase 4 Interventional Herlev Hospital · NCT05144399

This study is testing if a shorter course of antibiotics can safely treat patients with left-sided infectious endocarditis, compared to the usual longer treatment, to see if it helps them recover faster.

What this trial studies

This clinical trial investigates the safety and effectiveness of an accelerated antibiotic treatment for patients with left-sided infectious endocarditis. By utilizing individual patient data, such as clinical and paraclinical responses, the study aims to personalize treatment duration, potentially reducing the standard 4-6 weeks of hospitalization. The trial will enroll approximately 475 patients, focusing on those infected with specific bacteria like Streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the accelerated treatment or the standard treatment length.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old admitted with left-sided infectious endocarditis and who have received less than 14 days of relevant antibiotic treatment.

Not a fit: Patients with known immune incompetency or those experiencing a relapse of endocarditis within the last six months may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce hospitalization time and associated risks for patients with endocarditis.

How similar studies have performed: While there is ongoing research in personalized treatment approaches, this specific method of shortening endocarditis treatment based on individual responses is relatively novel.
