What this trial studies
This pilot trial evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of a short-term mentalization-based treatment (MBT-A) specifically designed for early adolescents diagnosed with mild to moderate depression. The study addresses the pressing need for evidence-based family interventions in adolescent mental health, particularly in the context of rising depression rates exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By involving families in the therapeutic process, the trial aims to leverage systemic support to enhance treatment outcomes. The study will include 15 families and assess the intervention's practicality and reception among participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are early adolescents diagnosed with mild to moderate major depressive disorder who have parental consent to participate.
Not a fit: Patients with autism spectrum disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, active suicidal ideation, substance use disorder, or those who are pregnant may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this treatment could provide a new, effective approach to managing adolescent depression through family involvement.
How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative in the Chilean context, similar mentalization-based treatments have shown promise in other populations, indicating potential for success.
